Souness, who's been known to dish out some tough love, couldn't be happier for Maguire. 'It's great to see Harry Maguire, one of the game's good guys, step up for Manchester United,' he said. 'He's had a rough time with previous managers and constant criticism, but he's shown real mental toughness.'
Souness met Maguire briefly in Qatar during the World Cup and found him to be a decent bloke. 'He's one of the game's good guys, so it's good to see him getting the credit he deserves,' Souness added.
Maguire was the heart of United's fighting spirit on Thursday night. The problem is, they've only shown this spirit occasionally, and that's not good enough for a club like United. 'You always have to be on it 100 percent in every game to be a United player,' Souness said.
And what about Lyon's goalkeeper, Andre Onana? Souness thinks he's best keeping his head down. 'Football has a habit of biting you on the backside,' he warned.
United's history and the magnitude of Old Trafford are always on the opposition's minds. 'You always have to be on it 100 percent in every game to be a United player,' Souness said. 'But this lot haven't been able to deal with that.'
